These labels don't show up unless you're editing the object in question. The instance number is a string parameter, so it can be added to the object as a "regular text" label if you want the number to show up in the top-level schematic view. For example: 1) Go to the analoglib2 library 2) Edit an object, say, "Polarized". 3) Start a text label (macro "t") 4) Type "C" then Alt-p 5) In the Tcl version, a window pops up with the parameter choices, of which number 3 is "?". Select this. In the non-Tcl version, you get a number of selections printed in the message window at the bottom of the screen, in which case you would select number 3. 6) Now the component and instance number appear on the schematic when this object is used. Note that this only works for components which use the parameter labeled "?". Otherwise, the instance number is not available. Yes, XCircuit can generate netlist output for HSPICE. Most HSPICE syntax, apart from device models, is compatible with the spice3-format that xcircuit produces. Most remaining differences can be handled, if necessary, by rewriting the "info labels" in the device objects for HSPICE syntax. If you want specific examples, just ask. Some information on modifying info labels for specific output requirements can be found in the schematic capture tutorial: http://xcircuit.ece.jhu.edu/tutorial/tutorial2.html However, there is nothing there specific to HSPICE. I looked into this a bit and discovered that, indeed, the way the code is written, autonumbering only works for pcb output. I did a simple code fix, but then I was faced with the problem that for SPICE output, xcircuit duplicates device index numbers on the P and N devices. I have instead devised a completely different way to implement the autonumbering. This will be quite a bit more than a simple code fix. I will keep you posted on the progress. . . I quickly discovered a major snag---the Tk graphics package in Cygwin is compiled with native Windows graphics API, not with X11. At the moment, getting XCircuit to run as a Tcl extension requires re-compiling Tk to use X11 graphics, not WIN32API. This is probably a more painful route than most people want to go, particularly as the benefits of the Tcl interface are minimal. I may try to rework the graphics sometime to allow me to write a WIN32 interface. For now, though, don't configure for compilation with "--with-tcl" if you're using Cygwin. But xcircuit's pcb netlist shows only two connections. > Is there some trick to getting it to see all three? Sometimes there are a few tricks, but more often there's just a bug in the code. . . In this case, if the bridge rectifier has the diodes positioned in a diamond, then the diode endpoints may not be touching the wire. There is some "slop" in the calculation of which wires connect to each other, but it's only a heuristic. If that's the problem, then increase the resolution of the snap-to grid ("-" key) and get the wire endpoints directly on top of each other. If that's not the problem, then send me the file with the problematic circuit, and I'll figure out what's going wrong. I have written a tool called xclib that is supposed to help people in creating libraries for xcircuit. It supports a creation process that is substantially different from editing the User Library and then saving the library via XCircuit - you design the whole library on a normal XCircuit page, saving that page as a .ps file, with all needed symbols automatically included by XCircuit, and later convert the .ps file to .lps using xclib. Personally, I find this creation process easier to handle than the normal one. You can download xclib (about 12KB) from this place: http://www.dojoe.de/download/xclib-0.8.tar.gz For details about xclib please see the included readme file. If anyone finds this program to be useful or to be lacking an all important feature, I would really love to hear about it. Oh, and Tim: if you wish to imclude xclib into the standard XCircuit distribution, don't hesitate ;) See ya, Joachim -- -=[ DoJoe a.k.a. Currently, about the only useful thing that goes into a PCB label is the "U?" line (in the templates), where the "?" is parameterized so that it can be filled in by the auto-numbering routine. This ensures that each device makes it into the PCB output file, and that each IC instance gets a unique index. > Does anyone have any collected wisdom on a web page for this? When the RedHat RPM version didn't work (clicking on the menu buttons never produced a menu [1]) I decided to just build it. I opted for TCL (I'm still using the Xw version at home) and the "try before installing" option. That didn't work. When I run ./configure --with-tcl make tcl make lib/tcl/xcircuit.sh setenv XCIRCUIT_LIB_DIR ./lib lib/tcl/xcircuit.sh it fails trying to start xcircuit, because the shell script seems to think tkcon.tcl is in lib/ instead of lib/tcl/ . I created a link, but then it popped up a panel complaining about not finding something else in ./lib . I just installed it, and that works fine so far. So the test doesn't work, but going straight to production does... Also, the web page for Code History stops at 3.1.4 . A bit out of date! Pretty minor stuff, I know, but I figure feedback is good (joke deleted). Sometimes (I don't know Debian well enough) the distributions have an install selection for "TCL development" which will also get you the necessary files. > python.c: In function `xc_netlist': > python.c:902: structure has no member named `thisinstance' I'll look into the Python bug, which does indeed look like a separate issue. I don't compile the Python version much anymore, so it tends to get accidentally broken from time to time. It was just as you said. I should have installed the ~-dev Debian package in the beginning. That took care of the tclConfig.sh problem. However, I couldn't get any Debian package to produce a tkConfig.sh. That required installing Tk from source (as you said). Also I had to learn that I needed Tcl/Tk 8.3 because Debian's stable distribution's compiler is too old for Tk 8.4. But now I'm up and running xcircuit with Tcl/Tk and everything is peachy! ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program. Message-ID: <20031126122303.GA30080@pern.dea.icai.upco.es> Hi all, first of all: thanks Tim for xcircuit. It's a really cool program. I have to say that I use it just to draw schematics, and I must add that xcircuit is very good at it. I can draw circuits at the same speed with xcircuit and by hand, and xcircuit ones are really better... Now, my problem. I have changed from 3.1.15 to 3.1.28 and I have a problem with the bounding box: there is a big white space around the circuit. Reading the "changes" file, I understand it is not a bug but a feature; I humbly ask reconsidering, because this change makes including the xcircuit eps into for example LaTeX quite cumbersome. At least it should be left as an option when saving in "embedded" form. Attached a little example. Including it in latex with \includegraphics{xcbb} will get too much white space. Thanks for considering this. Romano PS: I have another problem when compiling xcircuit with tcl. It seems that my .xcircuitrc is not read in that case. I have override default library #First library page library generic.lps 1 library analog.lps 1 library avlsi.lps 1 library digital.lps 1 library /home/romano/lib/xcircuit/utility.lps 2 library /home/romano/lib/xcircuit/bjtblock.lps 3 library /home/romano/lib/xcircuit/equivalent.lps 4 # disable schema in my .xcircuitrc file, and it seems that it is completely ignored if I compile --with-tcl. Thanks again. Romano PPS: if you don't mind, please Cc: me when replying. -- Romano Giannetti - Univ. It was not my intention to foul up the bounding boxes of encapsulated output. My main focus was getting the full-page output to work sensibly so that I could generate a magnified view of a bonding diagram and split it up into multiple 11"x17" pages. While I was fixing that, I cleaned up a lot of the code, and that had some unintended consequences. The quick fix is to edit the "%%BoundingBox:" line in the output and add two the four values, respectively, +72, +72, -72, -72. This will remove the 1" whitespace margins and produce a correct alignment in LaTeX documents (and ghostview). The distribution has been fixed in revision 29 (posted today). > PS: I have another problem when compiling xcircuit with tcl. It seems > that my .xcircuitrc is not read in that case. I have Tcl has the habit of ignoring all input after it encounters an error. The "override default library" is not a valid Tcl command (although I just fixed that). The command "disable schema" needs to be changed to "xcircuit::xschema disable", due to the fact that the GUI is handled through Tcl scripts, not the executable. I have added in the overrides; however, under TCL, the command "override default library" is changed to "library override". You can look at the file examples/.xcircuitrc in the distribution, which I have just changed from Python to TCL syntax. I currently use xfig for drawing my schematic because it allows me to generate combined ps/latex which is important when I write IEEE papers in Latex and I want to include eps files and I want to write in these eps files Latex fonts that are consistent with the rest of my document. This feature also allows me to write complex equations, matrices, anything you can think of,.. inside the schematic and export them with my schematic picture, which is really neat. I strongly suggest you looking into this feature and including it in your software because I know plenty of people like me who will be excited about it. By the way, my name is Makram M. Mansour. Apart from that temp solution, yes, a feature like that in XCircuit wouldn't be all too bad =) Although I assume it would be pretty hard to implement. My $0.02, Joachim -- -=[ DoJoe a.k.a. The new functionality is in the xcircuit-3.1.32 distribution on the XCircuit website. It works similarly to the xfig-style handling of LaTeX strings, but with a few differences. You create a text label in the file, and select "Text->LaTeX mode" from the XCircuit menu, setting a bit which tells XCircuit to treat this as a LaTeX string, not an XCircuit string. Then you can throw in any valid LaTeX syntax into the string. When you write the file back to disk, XCircuit will note if there is at least one LaTeX-formatted string on the page. If so, it will generate an accompanying ".tex" file, containing an "epsfig" statement to include the original XCircuit file, followed by a flattened list of all the LaTeX labels, positioned in the coordinate system of LaTeX. If you run ghostview on the XCircuit file itself, you will find that the labels do not appear in the output. The PostScript interpreter ignores them, and lets the LaTeX compiler handle them instead. Because the "epsfig" line is embedded in the file XCircuit writes, the only way to resize the figure is by adjusting the scale of the figure in XCircuit before writing the output. This is a minor inconvenience, and I may do something about it in the future. Another thing to note is that LaTeX controls the size of all the labels, not XCircuit. So the default text size will match the size of the surrounding text in the LaTeX document, and any resizing can be done by the usual LaTeX font sizing statements just prior to including the XCircuit ".tex" file. This feature is intentional; it prevents text on a figure from being unreadable. If you want control over the scale of each label, LaTeX size formatting commands can be put directly into the label string. I think this is a very useful feature for XCircuit, and I thank you for sending on the example files which let me figure out how to make it work. Note that I have only barely tested the function, so you should let me know of any problems or quirky behavior.
