I looked into this a bit and discovered that, indeed, the way the
code is written, autonumbering only works for pcb output.  I did
a simple code fix, but then I was faced with the problem that for
SPICE output, xcircuit duplicates device index numbers on the P
and N devices.

I have instead devised a completely different way to implement the
autonumbering.  This will be quite a bit more than a simple code
fix.  I will keep you posted on the progress. . .
