It seems I must have recompiled and installed an old version, because 
when I did (what I thought) was exactly the same steps, I got a binary 
that reports itself as version 3.6.131.

And it does not seg fault when I save the troublesome file.

Is it possible that the 3.6.83 was choking on a file made by a newer 
version? The original was created on my desktop while I was attempting 
to edit on my laptop. I won't know what version I have on my desktop 
until I'm back at my desk. *smile*

Anyway, it looks like the up-to-date version is working. But my need for 
editing is past, so it will be a couple days before I test it more 
extensively.
